2010 AGM - Sunday 28th March 2010
In attendance: Lee, Jac, Lawrence, Steve, Denzil, Rory, Pete, Simon, Mark S, Sean, Ryan and Mark H.
Apologies for absence: Mike
Lee began the meeting with a summary of what he as chairman, had been doing this last year. This included helping to set up the club, and starting powerkite lessons in conjunction with Lawrence throughout various schools in Cornwall.
He also organised applications for grant funding for the club, with a view to train members up to teach powerkiting in schools, and pay for a rescue craft for the club. Unfortunately as the club is in it’s early stages all were declined, however Lee was positive about re-applying and obtaining funding in the future.
Lee mentioned that the club was working to get beach signs on all of the main kite surfing beaches in Cornwall. This is in conjunction with the RNLI and the BKSA. We are working to keep access open for all Kiters.
Club committee members have been competing in events in the UK and abroad. 2009 was a successful year with Will being crowned wave champ, Denzil course racing champion and Lee getting various podium finishes.
The club is aiming to hold various events this year including some competitions and other informal beach gatherings. It was also suggested that local beach reps could organise informal social kites at various locations throughout the year.
The club held two events last year. The first, a demo day at Marazion. Kite manufacturers, kite clinics, massage and a bbq was on offer. The day was a success with a good turn out.
The second was a festive gathering at Perranporth beach. Members were treated to mulled wine and mince pies, as well as good wind, for a great kite session.
Jac the club secretary told us she was stepping down from the role, and it was voted that Rory would be the new secretary for the year ahead. Jac went on to say that the club now had 63 members, which was very good for the first year.
As Mike the club treasurer was absent, Jac spoke to say the club currently had £528 in the bank.
Lawrence spoke to say there had been no recent incidents at Marazion. A lot of new beginners using the beach. Beach signage delayed as landowners slow at responding. With regards to signage, Lawrence suggested a possible restriction two hours either side of high tide at Marazion, and maybe we could ask the club members what they would like on signage. Rory said he could put up a note on face book about this.
A big event had been planned for Marazion which the KKC could have been part of, but unfortunately the organisers have now moved the event to Wales. Lawrence suggested holding our own event at Marazion. Pete said although he was very busy with the shops this year he would be able to help get reps down for an event. Mark said he knows the event organiser at Watergate Bay and would look into it. Lawrence said he was very busy this year so may have to reduce the time he gives to the club.
Lawrence gave a quick summary about Kiting at Gwithian saying the council were thinking of banning it last year but enforced zoning instead. This was a success and were pleased with the good feedback received. The council are considering shifting the zones so the windsurfers have more space.
Steve (Hayle KKC Rep)
There has been a lot of targeted lobbying over the past six months to re-open a meaningful dialogue with the right people - those with responsibility and accountability for activities in the estuary. Our local MP Andrew George has proved invaluable in opening doors for our concerns to be raised. These meetings resulted in fresh discussions with ING representatives at the end of January. We are more optimistic than at any time in the past three years that these talks could deliver a solution for kitesurfing. But we do need to do all that we can to ensure success, and all kiters can please contribute by carrying on being safe, responsible ambassadors for the sport - an incident at The Bluff now could scupper a lot of hard work and jeopardise current and future opportunities. I hesitate putting a time scale on events as these things invariably seem to take longer than anticipated and we want to end up with the best long term effective solution. If anyone wants to know more please contact stevetownsend25@googlemail.com.
Denzil had no news to speak of about Par, except that the council were keen to have an event there.
Rory said the club had handled an incident at Perranporth last year with the council, who were pleased to have an official club to communicate with.
Pete thought it would be a good idea to get the club put on ‘Blue Gym’ a new NHS website.
Simon said general care needed to be taken at high tide on Crantock beach.
